Autumn Challenge 2014 - 2/8/2014 to 11/11/2014

Here we are again – time for the new challenges once more – seems like the summer has flown in – can’t believe it is time to do this all over again!

We have 5 challenges this season:

Some members on our Forum have been talking about (and showing pictures of) little ducks with tags attached.  These are from The Little Yellow Duck Project – you make little ducks and attach a tag to them then leave them in places for people to take home and ‘adopt’ as little acts of kindness.

The hope is that people will then go onto the website (which is to promote blood, bone marrow, organ and tissue donation) and leave a message to say where they found it.  Click here, to go to their website, where you can find the patterns and tags on there to get involved.

Stash Busting Squares:  Lots of us end up with odd balls of wool around and want to use them up, so why not crochet or knit squares (6 or 8 inch squares are most useful).  These can then be passed on to some of our Groups, who have projects to make blankes from squares for various charities and appeals.  The Fistula Project is one project who will turn squares into blankets to hand out to women in Sri Lanka and Sierra Leone.

If you feel like being a bit different, how about creating triangles instead?  These can be made into shawls - our Shires Group use triangles to create squares.

Once you feel you have finished, the squares or triangles can be sent to your local Group or to our HQ in Kelty - the mailing address is in our Contact Us section - local groups can be found in the Groups section.

Care Homes:  Most of us have homes for the elderly nearby who welcome donations for their clients.  We have found that Fiddle Mats, Activity Aprons, Busy Books, Fabric Marble Runs, Lap Rugs, Shoulder Wraps, Slippers and Bed Socks are popular; if you have a chat with the staff you will doubtless find out what they would like to have, as needs can be different for each.

So there we go – lots to choose from there – hope you are all happy with what has been chosen.  Next time I will hopefully have lots of choices as our new challenges and ideas committee will hopefully have found lots of things for me to choose from by then.

Innocent Smoothies Big Knit: This challenge has certainly developed a theme of help the elderly, so why not use up your scraps of yarn to create some hats for The Big Knit - click here to find out more.  There are lots of patterns and details of how to get involved.  There is also a Facebook page for people to share patterns and ideas for these wee hats, please click here to visit the Facebook  page.

Critter Challenge - Mouse or Meerkat:  You could make some Catnip mice to hand in to local animal shelters – or create some mouse or meerkat toys to pass on to our children’s charities.  Use  a pattern with a mouse or meerkat design in it or use fabric with these designs to make items.
